dns.vixen.computer

welcome to dns.vixen.computer, the only DNS server that's powered by foxes! this is lua's silly little public DNS server, running on an always-online VPS at Hetzner

this server is configured to either use either Cloudflare, Google, or NextDNS to resolve domain names, whichever responds quickest. all outgoing DNS requests are done over TLS or HTTPS, and it does DNSSEC verification too, so you can be sure your requests are private and correct. also, if you system supports it, you should use DoT or DoH instead of naked DNS over UDP! it's fully supported and keeps the request from your system to this server completely encrypted. 100% private! :D

for awesome and swag reasons i've decided to apply AdGuard's basic DNS filter list to results returned from this DNS server. so expect DNS requests for known advertising domains or weird spyware/tracking to return 0.0.0.0 instead of anything useful. it's nice!

a quick note: please dont abuse my cute little server xwx <3 i've made it public for the convenience of my friends, it's not to be used for anything evil or for any big projects / large networks / scanning, thanks! consider this the "terms of service" and just be nice :3

a much more time consuming note: it turns out the internet is an evil place where bots will scan for open dns servers and use them for EVIL things. after seeing some bot try and use me as part of an amplification attack campaign, and then also seeing someone request a single russian domain over 3 million times from a ton of random ips (a botnet?) i ended up spending an entire day writing new security-oriented patches for AdGuard Home. this server now has rate limiting that considers the size of responses, the ratio between request and response size, the diversity of requests, and a special list of evil botnet domains that will get you IP banned if you access too much. so RAHHHH. that sucked. if you're a normal user (or a power user. or a server operator. or anyone who isnt evil) you shouldn't notice anything at all. if you're experiencing issues, please Contact Me !!

this DNS server was made with love and i want it to be a useful tool. if something isn't working right, please let me know!

ready to get started? great! pop open your DNS server settings and select from:

once you've switched to using this DNS server, test your setup by visiting http://vixen-dns.net which should show you a cute little "it works!" page :3

are you lua? hi me! hello! you probably want to head to the login page right? ok bye!!!!

here's how to switch over on android:

and for those lowly windows 11 users:

oh yeah! if you use firefox, try DNS-over-HTTPS for extra security:

using something else? you should google it, and good luck! if you're a linux user i'm sure you can figure it out. consider configuring your router to serve the regular IPv4/IPv6 DNS server addresses via DHCP!
